ReferralCandy was the only product ChatGPT and Gemini kept naming, cited in 5 of the 6 referral marketing software questions we ran on 2026-08-03. No other product cleared four. Three tied for second at 4 of 6: Friendbuy, Referral Rock, and Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals. Referral Factory came next at 3 of 6. After that the field scattered: 23 different products were named across just six questions, and 15 of them came up exactly once.
We put six buyer-style questions about referral marketing software to ChatGPT and Gemini, gave each question one live web search, and recorded every product named and every source domain cited. This page is built only from that run. We do not sell referral marketing software, so Glotier was named in 0 of the 6 answers, and that is the right result.
Four products were core, the rest were a coin toss
Four names carried across most questions: ReferralCandy at 5 of 6, then Friendbuy, Referral Rock, and Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals at 4 of 6 each. If you sell referral software and you are not one of those four, the assistants treated you as situational. 15 of the 23 products named appeared in exactly one of the six answers, a 17% hit rate, and that was the single most common outcome in the category.
The shortest answer shows how loose the consensus is. "What referral marketing software should I use" named only 4 products (Lootly, Affise, ReferralCandy, Referral Factory), while "best free referral marketing software" named 8. Same buyer, different phrasing, and the lists barely resemble each other.
The wording changed the winners
This is the part worth staring at. The plain "best referral marketing software" question and the "best free referral marketing software" question shared zero products. Not one name appeared on both.
"Best referral marketing software" returned 7 names: ReferralCandy, Referral Rock, Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals, Friendbuy, GrowSurf, Referral Factory, and ReferralHero. "Best free referral marketing software" returned a different 8: Tremendous, Referrizer, UpPromote: Affiliate Marketing, Affise, Giftbit, Smile.io, Okendo, and EmployeeReferrals. Adding the word "free" dropped the entire leading roster, ReferralCandy included, even though ReferralCandy was named in 5 of the other questions.
Seven of those eight "free" products were one-question wonders. Tremendous, Referrizer, UpPromote: Affiliate Marketing, Giftbit, Smile.io, Okendo, and EmployeeReferrals were each named on the "free" question and nowhere else in the six. The free query behaves like its own category with its own vendors.
"Most affordable referral marketing software" barely moved off the "best" list. It named Referral Rock, ReferralCandy, Intercom Referral Factory, Referral Factory, Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals, GrowSurf, FirstPromoter, and Friendbuy, and 6 of those also appeared in the plain "best" answer. Only FirstPromoter (named just here) and the Intercom-labelled Referral Factory were new. So "affordable" reads as a synonym for "best," while "free" reads as a hard filter that swaps almost the whole shortlist.
A few more single-question entries show how far phrasing steers the list. "Referral marketing software recommendations" was the only question that surfaced Mention Me, LoyaltyLion, Rivo, and Vyper. "Best referral marketing software for small teams" was the only one that surfaced Genius Referrals. "Best referral marketing software" was the only one that surfaced ReferralHero. None of those six products appeared in any other answer.
Where the answers came from
Two domains fed every answer: referral-factory.com and tremendous.com were each cited in 6 of 6 questions. Then affise.com and referralcandy.com at 5 of 6, and klaviyo.com, referralrock.com, and yotpo.com at 4 of 6. Sixteen distinct domains supplied the citations in total.
Here is the key insight for anyone selling here: the most-named product came from its own website. ReferralCandy was named in 5 of 6 answers, and referralcandy.com was cited as a source in 5 of 6. The pairing repeats down the list: yotpo.com fed 4 answers and Yotpo was named 4 times, referralrock.com fed 4 and Referral Rock was named 4, referral-factory.com fed all 6 and Referral Factory was named in 3 (with one more mention under the separate label "Intercom Referral Factory"). When your own comparison content is in the retrieved set, your product tends to ride along.
But feeding an answer is not the same as being picked. tremendous.com was cited in all 6 answers, yet Tremendous the product was named only once, on the "free" question. affise.com was cited in 5 answers but Affise was named twice. klaviyo.com fed 4 answers and Klaviyo, an email tool, was never named as a referral product, and extole.com fed 2 answers while Extole was named zero times. These are vendors running "best referral software" roundups that rank competitors, so their pages get pulled constantly while their own name only sometimes survives into the answer.
Community threads were thinner but real: reddit.com was cited in 2 of 6 answers and quora.com in 1 of 6, showing up on the plain "best" and the "what should I use" questions. Review directories barely registered. Capterra was cited once and TrustRadius once, both only on the "free" question, and G2 did not appear in any of the six answers. In this category the shortlist is set by vendor roundups and a couple of forum threads, not by the directories most marketers pour time into.
How a vendor here gets named
Market share does not appear anywhere in this data. The only thing separating a named product from an unnamed one was whether a page recommending it sat in the 16 domains the assistants read. A product absent from all of them was named 0 times.
So the play is concrete. Get your product placed inside the exact roundup posts these answers pull from, referral-factory.com, tremendous.com, affise.com, referralcandy.com, klaviyo.com, growsurf.com, and extole.com among them. Publish your own comparison content, because referralcandy.com and yotpo.com show that your own domain in the source set moves your product into the answer. Seed the two forums that actually got cited, Reddit and Quora. And treat "free" and "affordable" as separate fights: a name that wins "best" can be missing from "best free" entirely, as all four leaders were.
The full list, counted
| Product | Named in | Share |
|---|---|---|
| ReferralCandy | 5 of 6 | 83% |
| Friendbuy | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Referral Rock | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Referral Factory | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Affise | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| GrowSurf | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Lootly | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Intercom Referral Factory | 1 of 6 | 17% |
Referral Factory shows up under two labels: "Referral Factory" at 3 of 6 and "Intercom Referral Factory" at 1 of 6, with both landing inside the same "most affordable" answer. We keep them as separate rows because that is how ChatGPT and Gemini named them, and we do not merge them into a single 4, a number the data never shows. The ninth row is one of 15 products tied at a single mention, a group that also includes EmployeeReferrals, FirstPromoter, Genius Referrals, Mention Me, LoyaltyLion, Rivo, and Vyper.
Why we measured a category we do not sell
We do not sell referral marketing software, so Glotier was named in 0 of these 6 answers, and that is the correct result rather than a gap to hide. What you just read is the entire thing we do, aimed at a category we have no stake in: we run the real buyer questions for your category against ChatGPT and Gemini, record who gets named and which pages fed each answer, and hand you the source list. The check is free, takes about a minute, and needs no account.
