ChatGPT SEO: how to get your product recommended by ChatGPT

When a buyer asks ChatGPT what to use, it names a short list and skips everyone else. ChatGPT SEO is getting onto that list. We measured 241 software categories to find what actually decides it, and the answer is not the one most guides give you.

What ChatGPT SEO actually is

Classic SEO ranks a link on a results page. ChatGPT SEO gets your product named inside the answer itself, so when someone asks “what is the best tool for X”, the assistant says your name. You will also see this called GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization). They are the same shift, and ChatGPT is where most buyers now ask, so it is the one worth measuring first. The prize is real: the assistant names a handful and the rest of the market does not exist for that buyer.

What actually decides who gets named

We ran the same six buyer questions across 241 software categories, put each to ChatGPT and Gemini with a live web search, and recorded every product named and every source domain behind the answer. The finding that matters for ChatGPT SEO: the source list decides who gets named, not market share and not schema alone.

Reddit was a source behind the answers in 93% of categories. Independent roundups and community Q&A fed most of the rest. G2 appeared in 56%. Capterra, the directory a lot of teams pay for, in 12%. The assistant can only name what its live search returns, so a product absent from those pages is invisible however good it is. And it is winnable: in 62% of categories no product was named in every answer, so the top slot is open more often than not.

The five moves that get you named

  1. 1. Get into the Reddit and community threads that rank. They were behind 93% of answers. This is earned, through genuinely useful replies, not a link you can buy.
  2. 2. Get into the recurring roundups, and keep G2 current. The “best X” articles that rank for your category feed most answers; G2 was in 56%. Being in the comparison table is the goal, not a passing mention.
  3. 3. Publish your own honest comparison page.A vendor’s own comparison page repeatedly became the source the assistant quoted. It is the one lever fully in your hands.
  4. 4. Let the crawlers in, and be answer-first. Allow GPTBot in robots.txt, add an llms.txt at your domain root, and use Article, Organization and FAQPage schema on answer-first pages. This is table stakes: it lets the assistant read you, but it does not get you named on its own.
  5. 5. Pick the question you want to win.“Best”, “best free” and “most affordable” pull different shortlists from different pages, so a smaller product can own a query the leaders never appear in.

Measure before you optimize

You cannot improve what you have not measured, and guessing which of the moves above you need is expensive. The honest first step is to see whether ChatGPT names you today, who it names instead, and which exact pages those answers were built from. That is what Glotier does: it works out your category, asks the assistants the questions your buyers type, and hands back a real “named in X of the answers” number with the source list behind it. The first check is free, there is no account and no card.

Questions people ask

What is ChatGPT SEO?
ChatGPT SEO (also called GEO or AEO) is optimizing so an assistant names your product when a buyer asks it what to use, instead of ranking a link on a results page. The unit is a mention inside the answer, not a blue link. It matters because buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity directly, and the assistant names a short list and skips everyone else.
How do I get my product recommended by ChatGPT?
Be present in the exact pages the assistant reads when it answers your category. In our measurement of 241 categories, Reddit was a source behind 93% of answers and independent roundups behind most of the rest, while Capterra was behind only 12%. So the moves that work are: get discussed in the Reddit and community threads that rank for your category, get into the recurring roundup and comparison articles, keep your G2 entry current, and publish your own honest comparison page. Then make sure GPTBot is allowed and your pages are answer-first with schema.
Does schema markup or an llms.txt file make ChatGPT recommend me?
They help the assistant read and trust your page, so they are worth doing (Article, Organization and FAQPage schema, an llms.txt at your domain root, and a robots.txt that allows GPTBot). But they are table stakes, not the deciding factor. In our data the answer was assembled from third-party pages far more than from a vendor's own site, so schema without presence on the pages the assistant actually pulls will not get you named.
How do I track whether ChatGPT mentions my product?
Ask the assistants the questions your buyers type, one live web search each, and record whether your name appears in the answer and which pages the answer was built from. That is exactly what Glotier does, free and with no account, so you get a real 'named in X of the answers' number and the source list behind it rather than a guess.
Is ChatGPT SEO the same as GEO or AEO?
They are near-synonyms for the same shift. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are the umbrella terms; ChatGPT SEO is the same idea aimed at the assistant most buyers actually use. The tactics are the same: get named in the answer, and get onto the pages the answer is built from.
