GEO vs SEO, and what actually differs

Most of the work is the same work. Three things genuinely differ, and they are the three that decide whether your existing effort translates.

The comparison, without the sales pitch

GEO depends on SEO, which is why replacing it makes no sense

An assistant answering a buying question runs a live web search. If nothing of yours or about you ranks for the terms it searches, nothing of yours gets retrieved, and you cannot appear in an answer built from pages that were never fetched. Ranking is the entry ticket.

So “GEO is replacing SEO” is not a strategy, it is a slogan with a subscription attached. The accurate version is that a second scoreboard now sits on the same field, and it is scored differently.

The three things that genuinely differ

  1. 1

The pages that decide it are mostly not yours

In the 3 categories we measured, the answers were built from 131 cited sources and the domains that kept deciding each category were third-party ones. That is the biggest practical shift: a lot of the work moves off your own domain, where you have influence rather than control.

  2. 2

The unit is a buying question, not a keyword

You track tens of questions, not thousands of keywords, because an assistant is answering a question rather than matching a term. That makes the whole thing cheaper and it makes the question set itself a decision worth taking seriously: pick the ten your buyers actually ask.

  3. 3

A win often does not come with a click

Being named in a recommendation has value even when nobody visits, which breaks a measurement habit most teams have built their reporting on. It is the hardest of the three to adjust to and the one people argue about most.

What stays exactly the same

Writing something worth citing. Being technically reachable and fast. Earning mentions from places people trust. Answering the question properly rather than around it. None of that changed, and a good SEO team is already most of the way to being a good GEO team.

Where to move budget first, if you are going to

Measure before you move anything, because the answer differs by category more than any framework admits. In our measurement one category was decided by a single niche blog and another by Reddit outright, and a plan built for the first would have wasted every hour spent on the second.

The one reallocation the data supports generally is worth naming: directories. Across the 18 answers we read, review directories accounted for 1 of 131 sources, 0.8%. If a listing renewal is in your budget, test whether your own category behaves the same way before you sign it again.

Questions people ask next

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO is about your page ranking for a query. GEO is about your product being named inside an answer that an assistant assembles from several pages, most of which you do not own. The work overlaps heavily because a page has to rank to get retrieved, but the target and the measurement are different.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO depends on SEO: an assistant retrieves pages via a live web search, so if nothing of yours or about you ranks, nothing of yours gets retrieved. It is better read as a new scoreboard on the same field than as a replacement sport.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
Very little in practice, and the distinction is mostly vocabulary. Answer engine optimisation usually refers to featured snippets and voice answers, generative engine optimisation to answers written by a model. Anyone drawing a hard line between them is usually selling one of them.
Do I need different tools for GEO?
You need one thing your rank tracker does not do: putting real buying questions to the assistants and recording which sources the answers were built from. Everything else you already have. That is why the honest version of this category is priced in tens of dollars a month rather than as a second Semrush.
Should I move budget from SEO to GEO?
Probably reallocate rather than move, and measure before you do either. One thing worth checking first: across 18 AI buying answers we read in full, review directories were 1 of 131 sources, 0.8%. If a directory listing is a line in your budget, that is the cheapest thing to test.
