Is SEO dead with AI search?

Everyone answering this has a position to defend. We would rather give you our own numbers, including the small and unflattering ones, and let you decide.

The short answer

SEO is not dead. The assumption that a good rank produces a visit is the thing that is dying, and that assumption was doing a lot of quiet work in how most teams plan.

An assistant answering “what is the best X” runs a live web search and writes from the pages it retrieves. Ranking still matters enormously, because it decides what gets retrieved. What changes is the payoff: you are now an input to somebody else’s answer rather than a destination, and often you get the influence without the click.

What it looked like on our own site

We are a small site and that makes the numbers legible, so here they are. Over ten days, ChatGPT sent us six visitors. Not six hundred. Cloudflare rounds up in its dashboard, so the raw figure is six, and every one of them landed on an app teardown rather than on any page that sells our product.

Separately, Semrush’s AI Search panel reports seventeen of our pages cited by ChatGPT worldwide, with brand mentions at zero. Semrush has a name for that pattern, ghost citations, and their own study found it in the majority of cases: the model uses your page as a source and never says who you are.

Three independent measurements, our probe, Cloudflare, and a competitor ’s tool, all pointing at the same thing. AI is reading us and not recommending us.

Which is a different problem from the one people are panicking about

The panic is “AI will take my traffic”. The measurable problem is narrower and more fixable: are you present in the pages the assistant retrieves for your category, and are those pages ones that lead anywhere useful.

On 26 July 2026 we measured that properly across 3 software categories: 18 buying questions, and every one of the 131 sources behind the answers read individually. In each category a handful of domains decided the outcome, and they were different domains each time. One category was decided by a niche blog, another by Reddit outright.

That is a workable problem. “Is SEO dead” is not.

What actually changes in how you work

Three things, and none of them is stopping SEO.

You start measuring answers instead of only positions, because a rank tells you nothing about whether the assistant used your page. You start caring about pages you do not own, since the sources deciding a category are mostly third-party. And you stop treating a click as the only evidence of value, because being named in a recommendation is worth something even when nobody clicks, which is genuinely hard to sit with if you have spent a decade on traffic charts.

The honest uncertainty

Our sample is one small site over ten days plus three categories measured on a single day. That is enough to disprove sweeping claims and not enough to make one. Anyone quoting you a confident percentage for how much traffic AI will take is guessing, including when the number is alarming and especially when it comes with a product attached.

The good news is that you do not need anyone’s forecast. The referrer is in your analytics today, and the sources behind your own category’s answers are readable today.

Questions people ask next

Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No, but the thing you are optimising for has moved. An assistant answering a buying question runs a live web search and writes from the pages it retrieves, so ranking still matters, it just matters as an input to somebody else's answer rather than as a destination. What is genuinely dying is the assumption that a rank equals a visit.
Is AI killing website traffic?
It is changing who arrives and why, and the honest numbers are small in both directions. On our own site, ChatGPT sent 6 visitors over 10 days. Semrush's AI Search panel separately reports 17 of our pages cited by ChatGPT worldwide and zero brand mentions, which is their "ghost citation" pattern: the model reads your page, uses it as a source, and never says your name.
Should I stop doing SEO and start doing GEO?
They are not separable in practice. The pages that get retrieved for an AI answer are usually pages that also rank, so the work overlaps heavily. What changes is the target: instead of your own page ranking first, you want to be present in whichever pages the assistant pulls for that question, and most of those belong to other people.
How do I know if AI is sending me anything?
Check the referrer. Assistants pass one, so chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai show up in any analytics you already have, including Cloudflare's free Web Analytics. Filter to those and you will get a real number rather than a feeling. Be ready for it to be small; ours was 6 in 10 days and that is still the most useful number we have.
If the traffic is that small, why bother?
Because the visit is not the only payoff, and arguably not the main one. A buyer who asks an assistant which tool to use and hears your name has been recommended, whether or not they click. The measurable part is which pages the assistant is building that recommendation from, and that is knowable today.
