Does Reddit affect AI search?

We read every source behind 18 AI buying answers to find out. Reddit was cited in 12 of them. Every review directory combined was cited 1.

What we did

On 26 July 2026 we took 3 software categories, put six real buying questions from each to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on one shared live web search, and then read every source the 18 answers were built from. That came to 131 source appearances. The full question sets and source lists are published, so none of this rests on trusting us.

Reddit, by category

The headline number hides the interesting part, which is how much categories differ.

CategoryAnswers citing RedditFull measurement
AI SEO tools2 of 6Read it
email marketing software4 of 6Read it
help desk software6 of 6Read it

Help desk software was decided by Reddit: all six answers pulled from it. AI SEO tools barely used it, and was instead dominated by a single blog called onelittleweb.com that appeared in all six. A generic list of “subreddits to post in” would have been useless for both.

The comparison that should move a budget

Group the 131 sources by what kind of page they are and the gap is not subtle. Community forums, Reddit, Quora, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, YouTube and Medium together, accounted for 21 appearances. Review directories accounted for 1: g2.com once, in help desk software, and capterra.com not at all.

That is about 21 to 1 in favour of the channel most software teams have no budget line for, against the one many of them renew annually. We are not telling you to cancel a directory listing on the strength of three categories measured on one day. We are telling you that this is measurable, that we measured it, and that most teams renewing have never checked.

What to actually do, and what not to

Start with the wrong version, because it is the common one. Do not go and post about your product in twenty subreddits. Moderators remove it, readers downvote it, and a deleted thread is cited by nobody. Reddit is unusually good at detecting exactly the behaviour that a finding like this tempts people into.

The version that works is slower and duller. Find the threads where your product is a genuine answer to a question someone actually asked. Answer the question properly, including the part where your product is not the right fit. Say that you built it. Do it in the handful of communities your own measurement shows are being cited, not the ones with the biggest subscriber counts.

The reason that works for AI answers specifically: an assistant retrieves a thread because the thread genuinely matches the question. A promotional comment in an unrelated thread does not match anything, so even when it survives moderation it never gets retrieved.

How Glotier does this part

This is the bit our product automates, so weigh it accordingly. The free check tells you which sources are behind the answers for your category, which is how you find out whether Reddit matters to you at all, and it needs no account.

On a paid plan the agent goes further: it reads the same measurement daily, works out which subreddits are actually being cited in your category, finds the specific threads worth answering, and drafts a reply for each one in your voice. You approve and post everything yourself. We never post for you, and that is a deliberate limit rather than a missing feature, because automated Reddit posting is exactly the thing that gets an account banned and a brand written off.

Questions people ask next

Does Reddit affect AI search results?
In our measurement, heavily. We put 18 buying questions across 3 software categories to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and read every source behind the answers. reddit.com was cited in 12 of the 18 answers, more than any other domain, and in help desk software it appeared in all six. It is one measurement of three categories, so check your own, but the pattern was consistent across all three.
Is Reddit better than G2 for AI visibility?
On this evidence, by a wide margin. Community sources (Reddit, Quora, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, YouTube, Medium) accounted for 21 of the 131 source appearances behind those answers, 16.0%. Review directories accounted for 1, 0.8%: g2.com once, capterra.com never. That is roughly 21 to 1 in favour of the forums most software teams have no budget line for.
Should I post about my own product on Reddit?
Not the way most people mean. Self-promotion gets removed by moderators and downvoted by the people you are trying to reach, and a deleted thread cites nothing. What works is answering questions in threads where your product is a genuine answer, disclosing that you built it, and being useful when it is not the right fit. That is slower and it is the only version that survives.
How long until a Reddit thread shows up in an AI answer?
Unknowable in advance, and anyone quoting you a number invented it. Retrieval depends on whether the thread ranks for the query the assistant searched, which depends on the subreddit, the title and how much the discussion actually matches the question. What you can do is measure: run the same buying questions on a schedule and watch whether new sources appear behind the answers.
Which subreddits matter for my category?
The ones already being cited, which is a question with a factual answer rather than a guess. Read the sources behind the answers your buyers' questions produce, and the same few communities will keep appearing. In help desk software every one of the six answers pulled from Reddit; in AI SEO tools only two of six did, and a niche blog mattered far more. Categories differ enormously, which is exactly why a generic list of subreddits is worthless.

Measured 26 July 2026 against ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, one shared live web search per question. Source counts are appearances, not unique domains: a domain cited in four answers counts four times. Assistants change their answers over time, so this is a record of a moment.
