How much does AI SEO actually cost?

The software is between free and $399 a month. That is the easy half and the small half. Here is the whole bill, including the part no vendor puts on a pricing page.

The software, which is the cheap part

Published entry prices across the eighteen tools we track run from $20 a month at the bottom to $250 at the top, with most of the category sitting between $29 and $99. Higher tiers go further: one Growth plan is $399. Four tools have a genuinely free tier rather than a trial, and two will not publish a price at all. Every figure read off the vendor’s own page on 2026-07-17, and the full table is here.

If you are agonising between a $29 tool and a $39 one, you are optimising the wrong number. The gap is a hundred and twenty dollars a year, and it is nothing next to the line item below.

The work, which is the expensive part

Measurement tells you which pages decide your category. It does not put you on them. That is the actual cost, and it is paid in hours rather than dollars, or in agency fees if you buy the hours from somebody else.

What the hours go on depends entirely on what your measurement says, and this is why a generic budget is impossible. When we measured 3 categories on 26 July 2026, reading all 131 sources behind 18 answers, each one had a different gatekeeper. One was decided by a single niche blog, which means pitching one editor. Another was decided by Reddit, which means turning up in threads consistently for months. Those are wildly different amounts of work and no pricing page can tell you which you are facing.

What you can skip

Two line items people budget for that our measurement did not support.

Review directories: across those 18 answers, G2 appeared once and Capterra never, 1 of 131 sources. Check your own category before renewing, but check it rather than assuming.

And anything sold as training a model to like you. You cannot train a model you do not own, your chats teach it nothing about your company, and the service selling you that is selling a misunderstanding. That is worth its own page.

A realistic starting budget

Month one, spend nothing. Run a free check, read the source pages behind the answers, and write down the domains that keep reappearing. In every category we measured there were fewer than five that mattered. That exercise is most of the value and it costs an afternoon.

After that, the monthly software line is tens of dollars, and the question worth asking is not which tool is cheapest but which one shows you the source pages and re-asks a frozen question set, because without both you are paying for a number you cannot act on or compare.

For reference, ours is $39/month for 3 products and up to 150 questions. Three tools on the comparison page cost less than that and we name them there.

Get Glotier Solo

The measurement is the cheap part and the work is the expensive part, which is why Solo does both: it measures your category daily and then writes the article and the posts that the measurement points at, so the hours go into approving rather than starting from nothing.

  • The same buyer questions re-asked every day, so you see the moment an answer changes
  • Every source page behind each answer, which is where the work actually is
  • An article written from what it measured that day, ready for you to publish
  • The subreddits and threads worth answering, with a reply drafted for each

Track 3 products and up to 150 buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. $39/month.

Questions people ask next

How much does AI SEO cost?
The software runs from free to $399 a month, with most of the category between $29 and $99 and four tools offering a genuine free tier. But software is the small half. The real cost is the work the measurement points to: getting onto the pages that decide your category, which is either your own hours or an agency's. Budget the tool in tens of dollars and the work in hours per week.
Is AI SEO cheaper than traditional SEO?
The tooling is far cheaper, because you are tracking tens of buying questions rather than thousands of keywords, and there is no link-building budget attached. The work overlaps heavily with content and community effort you may already be doing. The genuinely new cost is measurement, and that is the line item that runs in tens of dollars a month rather than hundreds.
Do I need to pay for a tool at all?
Not to find out where you stand. Four tools have a real free tier and our own check runs with no account and no card. You start paying when you want the second measurement and the ones after it, because direction needs the same questions asked again on a schedule, and no free tier does that for you.
What is the cheapest way to start?
Run a free check, read the source pages behind the answers, and pick the one or two domains that keep appearing. That costs nothing and it is genuinely most of the value, because in every category we measured the answer was decided by a small number of pages. Pay for a tool once you want to know whether what you did worked.
How long before it pays for itself?
Nobody honest will give you a number, and a vendor quoting one has invented it. What we can tell you is what the spend is for: not a ranking, but knowing which pages decide your category and whether last month's work moved the answer. If that knowledge is not worth the monthly figure to you, the honest advice is to stay on the free check.
