Perplexity visibility: how to get cited, and how to check it

By Oğuzhan Tüsen @oguzhanglotierPublished Figures last checked

Perplexity answers by running its own live search and showing the sources it used, numbered, under every reply. That makes it the most checkable of the assistants: you can read exactly which pages decided the answer. Here is how it retrieves and cites, how to check whether it names you, and how to get into the sources it reads.

How Perplexity finds and cites sources

Perplexity does not answer from memory. For most questions it runs a live web search, retrieves a set of pages, and writes the answer from them, with numbered citations pointing back at each source. The sources are shown, which is the part that matters for anyone trying to get named: you are not guessing what the answer read, because it tells you.

That also means the answer is reassembled on every ask. The same question a week later can pull a different set of sources, so a single good result is not a position you hold. It is one reading, and the honest way to treat Perplexity visibility is as something re-measured, not won once.

How to check whether Perplexity names you

You can do this by hand this afternoon, no tool required. Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers actually ask, the “best X for Y” and “what should I use to do Z” kind, and read two things: does your brand appear in the written answer, and does your domain appear in the numbered sources underneath. Named in the answer is the win. Present in the sources but not named is the near miss worth chasing.

Do it more than once, on more than one day. Because the source set is rebuilt each time, one check tells you almost nothing, and a brand that appears one day and not the next is the normal state, not an error. The signal is in the pattern over time, which is exactly the thing a person checking by hand runs out of patience to keep doing.

How to get into Perplexity’s sources

Three things, in order. Be retrievable: Perplexity reads what ranks for the terms it searches, so if your page does not rank it is not in the running. Be in the pages it already pulls: in our own category the answers leaned on community discussion far more than on vendor marketing, so being discussed on the third-party pages Perplexity reads matters more than polishing your own. And do not lock the door: if your robots.txt blocks PerplexityBot, you have removed yourself from the sources by hand.

On that last point we have a number. Across 259 domains the assistants actually cite, only 7 block PerplexityBot by name, so blocking is rare among the sites that get cited, and it is worth checking you are not one of the few. One caveat has to travel with any Perplexity access figure, ours included: For Perplexity this records what a site declares, not whether Perplexity can read it.

What Glotier does for Perplexity

Glotier puts every category question to Perplexity, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini, on one shared live web search, and records whether Perplexity named you and every source it cited. Asking all three matters because they disagree on who to name more often than they agree, so a Perplexity-only read is one opinion and a ChatGPT-only read is a different one. Glotier tracks all three and shows where they part.

The number that does not flatter us: put to the same questions in our own category, the assistants, Perplexity among them, named us 0 of 78 times. In the one measured week, Perplexity did send us 1 real visitor of the 6 that assistants referred in total, counted by a beacon no bot triggers. Small, real, published beside every other number, because a brand monitor you cannot point back at its own maker is marketing.

Assistant referrals measured 23 July 2026 to 29 July 2026 from our own Cloudflare beacon. Crawler access measured across 259 cited domains on 31 July 2026, at whole-site robots.txt level, which understates blocking. Our own naming figure, 0 of 78, is from our daily category probe as of 31 July 2026.
