Three products tied at the top of benefits administration software: Benefitfocus, Benepass and Gusto were each named in 4 of the 6 answers we collected. We put six buyer questions to ChatGPT and Gemini on August 4, 2026, gave each one a live web search, and recorded every product they named and every source they cited. No tool ran the table. The three most-named names still sat out a third of the questions.
Right behind the leaders, ten names clustered at exactly 3 of 6 answers: ADP, ADP Benefits (its second label), BambooHR, bswift, Employee Navigator, GoCo, Paycor, Paylocity, PlanSource and Rippling. When ten products share the same 50% frequency, these two models have no strong consensus pick in this category. Ask the same thing two different ways and you get two different shortlists.
The question changed the shortlist more than the products did
The bare query, "best benefits administration software," returned eight names: ADP Benefits, BambooHR, Benepass, Rippling, Gusto, Deel, GoCo and Workday. That is the modern all-in-one HR crowd. Workday appeared here and in none of the other five questions, its only showing in the entire run of 6.
Add one word, "free," and the shortlist nearly inverted. "Best free benefits administration software" returned ADP, Paycor, Paylocity, Employee Navigator, PlanSource, bswift, Benefitfocus and Gusto, 8 names. Only Gusto and the ADP brand carried over from the bare "best" list (ADP appeared there as "ADP Benefits"). The other six, Paycor, Paylocity, Employee Navigator, PlanSource, bswift and Benefitfocus, are the traditional benefits-admin specialists, and none of them appeared when we simply asked for the "best."
"Most affordable benefits administration software" produced a third, different set of 8: Gusto, Benepass, Rippling, ADP, BambooHR, GoCo, Justworks and Paycor. To these two models, "affordable" is not "free." Affordable swung back toward the modern platforms that "free" had dropped, with Benepass, Rippling, BambooHR and GoCo all returning, and it surfaced Justworks, which showed up in this one answer and nowhere else across the 6.
So three products in this run appeared in a single sub-question only: Workday in the bare "best," Justworks in "most affordable," and Paycor Benefits Administration (Paycor's second label) in "best for small teams." A benefits vendor can be invisible to five of six buyer phrasings and still surface on the sixth. If you track only the bare "best" query, you are watching 1 of the 6 phrasings buyers actually use.
The source map: who feeds the answers
One domain fed every answer. adp.com was cited in all 6 of 6 responses, the most-cited source in the category by a wide margin, and the ADP brand (under one label or the other) was named in all 6 answers too. That is the cleanest signal in this data: the vendor whose own domain these models lean on hardest is also the vendor they name most reliably.
The next tier of sources mixes an analyst, a job board and one more vendor: gartner.com (5 of 6), indeed.com (5 of 6) and getbenepass.com (5 of 6). getbenepass.com is Benepass's own site, and Benepass was named in 4 of 6 answers. Two of the four most-cited sources in this category are vendor-owned, and both of those vendors rank among the most-named products.
Each of the three most-named products has its own domain in the source list: getbenepass.com (5 of 6) behind Benepass, gusto.com (2 of 6) behind Gusto, and benefitfocus.com (2 of 6) behind Benefitfocus. bamboohr.com (2 of 6) sits behind BambooHR, named in 3 of 6. The pattern is hard to miss: the products these models name are the ones whose own pages the models are reading.
Community discussion mattered. reddit.com was cited in 4 of 6 answers, level with takecommandhealth.com, a health-benefits site that publishes category roundups. Reddit was the only community-thread source in the whole set: no Quora thread was cited at all. The remaining sources were roundup and comparison pages, led by myshortlister.com (3 of 6), then single citations from monday.com, benely.com, getebm.com and mybentek.com.
The classic software review directories barely registered. G2 was cited once, in the "recommendations" answer, and TrustRadius once, in "best free." Capterra was not cited in any of the 6 answers. In a category where vendors pour budget into G2 and Capterra profiles, those pages moved almost none of these two models' answers.
What we would do to get named here
If we ran marketing for a benefits vendor, this data would reset the plan. The source list, not market share, decides who gets named. ADP is in all 6 answers not because a model "knows" it is the largest, but because adp.com is cited in all 6 answers and adp.com is where the model reads.
The concrete move: get your own domain into the pages these two models actually pull. Publish real comparison and category content on your own site, the way Benepass (getbenepass.com, 5 of 6) and Gusto (gusto.com, 2 of 6) already do, and earn a place in the roundups that repeat across questions: gartner.com (5 of 6), indeed.com (5 of 6), takecommandhealth.com (4 of 6) and myshortlister.com (3 of 6). Show up in the Reddit threads that fed 4 of 6 answers. Do not spend the next quarter on a Capterra profile that was cited 0 times here.
Watch the phrasing too. Because "free" and "affordable" returned near-opposite shortlists, a vendor that tracks only the bare "best" query is blind to half its exposure. The specialists, Employee Navigator, PlanSource, bswift and Paylocity, each held 3 of 6 by owning the "free" and "small teams" answers while staying absent from "best," and the modern platforms did the reverse.
The full list, counted
| Product | Named in | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Benefitfocus | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Benepass | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Gusto | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| ADP | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| ADP Benefits | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| BambooHR | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| bswift | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Employee Navigator | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| GoCo | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Paycor | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Paylocity | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| PlanSource | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Rippling | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Deel | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Justworks | 1 of 6 | 17% |
| Paycor Benefits Administration | 1 of 6 | 17% |
| Workday | 1 of 6 | 17% |
Two brands appear twice under different labels, and we left them split because that is how the answers named them: ADP as both "ADP" (3 of 6) and "ADP Benefits" (3 of 6), and Paycor as both "Paycor" (3 of 6) and "Paycor Benefits Administration" (1 of 6). We did not add those together. If you did, ADP would look like the runaway leader at 6 of 6, and the measurement does not say that. It says two labels each landed at 3 of 6.
Where we fit, and where we do not
One honest note on us. Glotier does not sell benefits administration software, so we are absent from all 6 of these answers, and that is the correct result. We would be worried to see a Glotier product surface when a buyer asks an AI for a benefits tool.
This page is the exact thing we run for a customer's own category. We put the six buyer phrasings to ChatGPT and Gemini, log every product named and every source cited, and hand back the shortlist and source map you just read. If you sell benefits software, you would learn in about a minute whether you are the Benefitfocus of your answers at 4 of 6 or the Workday at 1 of 6, and which pages you would need to appear on to move up. The check is free, no account, about a minute.
