When we put six buyer questions about shipping software for e-commerce to ChatGPT and Gemini on 3 August 2026, four tools were named in every answer: Easyship, Pirate Ship, Shippo, and ShipStation each landed in 6 of 6. There is no single winner in this category, there is a four-way tie at the top.
We ran one live web search per question and recorded every product each assistant named and every source domain it drew from. Twelve products were named in total across the six answers, but the drop after the top four is steep: Sendcloud is next at 4 of 6, then Veeqo at 3 of 6, and everything else was named twice or once.
Those four leaders are the stable core of the category as AI sees it. Easyship, Pirate Ship, Shippo, and ShipStation appeared whether the question asked for the plain best, the best for small teams, the cheapest, or the free option. Being in 6 of 6 answers means a buyer who asks once, in any phrasing, hears all four of these names.
How the shortlist changed across the six questions
The four constants held in all 6 of 6 answers, but the rest of the list churned with the wording of the question. This is the part most vendors miss: "best", "best free", and "most affordable" are different queries, and they do not return the same names.
The bare "best shipping software for e-commerce" question produced the widest list, eight names: the four constants plus Sendcloud, Veeqo, ReadyShipper X, and ShipAccel. ReadyShipper X and ShipAccel, each named 2 of 6 overall, both make their first appearance in this one.
The "best free" question returned six names and surfaced the one product that appears nowhere else in the entire measurement: Descartes XPS Ship, named 1 of 6. The free framing also pushed out mid-list names the broader questions carried, such as Veeqo (3 of 6) and AfterShip (2 of 6), neither of which appears in the free answer.
The "most affordable" question returned seven names and also produced a product unique to it: Outvio, named 1 of 6. Outvio is named in the affordable answer and nowhere else. So the two single-question products in this whole run, Descartes XPS Ship and Outvio, are exactly the names a buyer hears only if they say the word "free" or "affordable".
"Small teams" had its own signature. ShippingEasy and AfterShip, each 2 of 6, appear together in the small-teams and "what should I use" answers but never in the plain "best" list. Veeqo, at 3 of 6, leaned the opposite way: it showed up for "best", "most affordable", and "recommendations", but never for "free" or "small teams".
The source map: who the answers came from
Eleven domains fed the six answers, and the top of that list is not a review site. Quora, Reddit, and ringly.io each sat behind 6 of 6 answers, the only three sources cited in every single response.
Community threads did as much work here as any publisher. Reddit and Quora were each cited in 6 of 6 answers. A large part of why AI names Easyship and Pirate Ship so consistently is that people keep recommending them in those threads.
The roundup layer was ringly.io at 6 of 6, pitneybowes.com at 4 of 6, and biz2credit.com at 2 of 6, editorial "best shipping software" pages. Worth noting: Pitney Bowes is itself a shipping vendor, yet none of its own products were named in any of the 6 answers. Its site fed the answers as a roundup, not as a brand.
Here is the insight for any vendor: six of the eleven source domains were vendors' own websites, and each maps to a product that got named. easyship.com fed 4 of 6 answers and Easyship was named in 6 of 6. sendcloud.com fed 4 of 6 and Sendcloud was named 4 of 6. shipstation.com (3 of 6), goshippo.com (Shippo), and xpsship.com (Descartes XPS Ship, cited in the same free question its product was named) fill out the pattern. Easyship is the clean case: own domain in 4 of 6 answers, product in all 6.
One honest caveat from the same data: being cited is not the same as being named. outvio.com fed 3 of 6 answers, but Outvio the product was named only 1 of 6, because its blog also lists rivals. A source page can put your competitors in the answer as easily as you.
What is missing matters too: not one of the eleven domains was a software review directory. No G2, no Capterra, no Trustpilot. On this date, in this category, the classic review sites fed zero of the six answers.
What a vendor here would do to get named
If you sell shipping software and want to be in these answers, the source map is your to-do list. AI named the products its eleven sources discussed, so the job is getting into those exact sources, not growing market share first.
Concretely: be part of the conversation on Reddit and Quora, which between them fed 6 of 6 answers, and earn a place in the roundup pages that rank for these queries, ringly.io first at 6 of 6. Easyship shows the compounding payoff, present in the threads, the roundups, and its own domain (4 of 6), and named in every one of the 6 answers.
Size did not decide this. Descartes XPS Ship and Outvio are not the biggest brands in shipping, yet each earned a place by being the right citation for one specific question, "free" and "affordable". The list of sources, not the size of the company, chose who was named at 1 of 6 apiece.
The full list, counted
| Product | Named in | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Easyship | 6 of 6 | 100% |
| Pirate Ship | 6 of 6 | 100% |
| Shippo | 6 of 6 | 100% |
| ShipStation | 6 of 6 | 100% |
| Sendcloud | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Veeqo | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| AfterShip | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| ReadyShipper X | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| ShipAccel | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| ShippingEasy | 2 of 6 | 33% |
Below these sit the two single-question products already named above, Descartes XPS Ship and Outvio, each at 1 of 6. No brand in this run appeared under two different labels, so every count above is one product, counted once.
We do not make shipping software, so Glotier is correctly absent from all six of these answers. That is the right result: this map should only name tools a buyer would actually be pointed to.
Running the measurement, though, is exactly what we do for a customer's own category. We put six real buyer questions to ChatGPT and Gemini, recorded who got named and which sources fed each answer, and built the map above. The same check on your own product is free, needs no account, and takes about a minute.
