Brand24 and BrandMentions tied for the top of this category, each named in 4 of the 6 answers ChatGPT and Gemini gave on 2026-08-06.
We asked ChatGPT and Gemini six ways a buyer asks for a media monitoring tool, gave each question one live web search, and recorded every product named and every source domain cited. Twenty-three product names came up across the 6 answers, and not one was named in all six: the highest score any product reached was 4 of 6.
The two leaders never met on the same question. Brand24 earned its 4 of 6 on the general and value questions (best, what should I use, most affordable, and recommendations), while BrandMentions earned its 4 of 6 on small teams, free, most affordable, and recommendations. They overlapped on only 2 of the 6 questions, so even the two winners are answering slightly different searches.
Six phrasings, six different shortlists
The wording of the question changed the answer more than any product's quality did. Of the 23 product names, 12 appeared in only one of the 6 questions. Rephrase the search and about half the list is swapped out.
The "best free media monitoring software" question returned an almost separate list: BrandMentions, TailWind, Talkwalker Alerts, Google Alerts, and TweetDeck. Three of those five, Talkwalker Alerts, Google Alerts, and TweetDeck, appeared in no other answer at all. Ask for free and every paid incumbent from the general question drops out.
The "for small teams" question surfaced a PR relations cluster that showed up nowhere else: Agorapulse, Prowly, Propel, and Muck Rack, all four named only on that question, 1 of 6 each. A buyer who adds "for small teams" is steered toward media databases and PR CRMs, not the brand-listening tools that lead the plain question.
The bare "best media monitoring software" question is where the enterprise incumbents live: Meltwater, Cision, Brandwatch, Isentia, and Streem all appeared here. Cision and Streem were named on this question and no other, 1 of 6 each, so they exist in the answer only when the buyer uses no qualifier.
The "most affordable" set (BrandMentions, TailWind, Talkwalker, Metricool, BuzzSumo, and Brand24) shares just two of its six names with the "free" set: BrandMentions and TailWind. Free and cheap are treated as two different questions with two different answers, and only those two products bridge them.
The open-ended "recommendations" question pulled in Determ and "Mention by Agorapulse", each named only there, 1 of 6. It was also the one question where Brand24, BrandMentions, Talkwalker, Brandwatch, Meltwater, and Sprout Social all appeared together, six names in a single answer.
Where the answers came from
Reddit was in every answer. reddit.com was cited in all 6 of the 6 questions, more than any other source and the only domain to appear every time. For this category, the two assistants treated community threads as the backbone of the answer.
Two editorial roundups came next: blog.hubspot.com and swydo.com were each cited in 4 of 6 answers. A single strong roundup placement reached more of these answers than almost any vendor's own website did.
Review and analyst directories appeared, but selectively. g2.com and gartner.com were each cited in 3 of 6 answers, while Capterra did not appear in any of the 6. A profile on G2 or Gartner helped here, a Capterra-only presence bought nothing.
Two more roundups, reachreport.io and thecmo.com, were each cited in 3 of 6, and quora.com in 2 of 6. Between Reddit, Quora, and these roundups, community and editorial pages supplied most of what ChatGPT and Gemini read, ahead of vendor marketing.
The key insight is Brand24. Its own domain, brand24.com, was cited in 2 of 6 answers, and Brand24 was named in 4 of 6, tied for first. Both answers that cited brand24.com also named Brand24. When a vendor's own pages are among the retrieved sources, that vendor tends to be in the answer. Five other vendor domains showed up once each, meltwater.com, talkwalker.com, cision.ca, hootsuite.com, and pr.co, at 1 of 6 apiece.
What actually gets a tool named
Naming tracked the source list, not market share. Meltwater and Cision are among the largest media monitoring vendors by revenue, yet Meltwater was named in 2 of 6 and Cision in 1 of 6, both behind Brand24 and BrandMentions at 4 of 6. The tools that won are the ones written up in the Reddit threads and roundups the assistants read, not the ones with the biggest budgets.
So the work for a vendor here is concrete. Get discussed in the relevant Reddit threads, which fed 6 of 6 answers. Earn a place in the roundups that carry weight, HubSpot's blog and Swydo at 4 of 6 each. Keep current G2 and Gartner profiles, 3 of 6 each. And publish owned pages that genuinely rank, the way brand24.com did to land in 2 of 6.
It also means covering the phrasings, not just the category. A tool that wants the free buyer has to be in the free conversation, where only 5 products were named and 3 of them appeared nowhere else. Winning "best media monitoring software" did nothing for "best free media monitoring software", which returned a nearly separate list.
The full list, counted
Here is every product named in two or more of the 6 answers. One note on the raw labels, because we have not merged them: Mention was recorded once as "Mention" and once as "Mention by Agorapulse" (1 each), Agorapulse also appears on its own (1 of 6), and Talkwalker's paid platform (3 of 6) is counted separately from the free Talkwalker Alerts (1 of 6). We show each label at its measured count rather than sum brands into a figure the data does not contain.
| Product | Named in | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Brand24 | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| BrandMentions | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| BuzzSumo | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Talkwalker | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Awario | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Brandwatch | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Isentia | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Meltwater | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Metricool | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Sprout Social | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| TailWind | 2 of 6 | 33% |
Where Glotier fits
Glotier does not sell media monitoring software, so we were not named in any of these 6 answers, and that is the correct result. We would be worried if an AI assistant invented us into a category we are not in.
This page is exactly what we run for a customer's own category: the six ways buyers phrase the question, every product the assistants name, and the source pages behind each answer. For media monitoring the story was that Reddit fed 6 of 6 answers and Brand24's own domain helped carry it to 4 of 6. Your category has its own version of that map, and it is measurable.
If you sell in a category like this one, you can pull your own version of this measurement, the same six phrasings we used here, in about a minute. The check is free and needs no account.
