Atlan was the only product ChatGPT and Gemini named in all 6 of 6 answers when we asked them to recommend data governance software. On 2026-08-04 we put six buyer questions to the two assistants, let each run one live web search, and recorded every product named and every source cited. Atlan came back in every single answer, a clean 6 of 6.
Behind Atlan the field thins quickly. Collibra was named in 5 of 6 answers and Domo in 5 of 6 as well, tied at 83%. Spider Impact landed in 4 of 6 (67%). Then it steps down to Microsoft Purview at 3 of 6 (50%), and Salesforce and Veza at 2 of 6 each (33%). Nine further products were named exactly once, 1 of 6, or 17%.
Two brands showed up under two different labels, so we report them the way the data recorded them rather than merging them. Microsoft's product appeared in some form in all six questions, but the assistants wrote it as "Microsoft Purview" in 3 answers and "Microsoft Purview Data Governance" in 3 answers, and we keep those as two rows instead of a combined 6. Collibra was the same story: "Collibra" in 5 answers and "Collibra Data Governance" in 1, which we do not add into a single number the data never showed.
How the shortlist changed from one question to the next
Only two names survived every phrasing. Atlan appeared in all 6 of the sub-questions, and Collibra appeared in all 6 too, though in the free question it was labelled "Collibra Data Governance." Every other product moved in and out depending on how the question was worded, which is the whole point of this page.
The "best free data governance software" question was the only one of the six to name Enzuzo, a consent and privacy tool. Enzuzo appeared in 1 of 6 questions and nowhere else, pulled in entirely by the word "free."
The "most affordable data governance software" question was the only one to name Apache Atlas, the open-source project, again 1 of 6. The free set and the affordable set did not match: free surfaced Enzuzo, affordable surfaced Apache Atlas, and the affordable answer was the shortest of all six with just 5 products named.
The "for small teams" question brought in three names that appeared in none of the other five: Informatica, Alation, and Snowflake Horizon, each 1 of 6. Read only the bare "best" answer and you would never see them.
The open-ended "data governance software recommendations" question produced the longest shortlist at 8 products, and was the only one to surface MineOS, Segment, and Egnyte, each 1 of 6. The plain "what should I use" question was the only place Databricks Unity Catalog appeared, also 1 of 6. The bare "best data governance software" question named 7 products and was where Veza and Salesforce both landed, at 2 of 6 apiece, neither of them a pure governance tool.
Add it up and 9 of the 18 products we recorded appeared in only a single one of the six questions. Half the field is invisible unless a buyer happens to phrase the question the exact way that surfaces it.
Where the answers came from
Five domains fed every one of the 6 answers: reddit.com, gartner.com, and three vendor sites, domo.com, salesforce.com, and spiderstrategies.com, each cited 6 of 6 times. That small stack of pages is doing most of the work behind both assistants.
The community thread carried as much weight as the analyst. Reddit was a source in all 6 of 6 answers, exactly level with Gartner at 6 of 6. There was no Quora anywhere in this set, but a single Reddit presence counted for as much as the biggest analyst name in the category.
Here is the insight that matters most. Three of the five domains cited in every answer are the vendors' own websites, and each of those vendors got named. domo.com was a source 6 of 6 times and Domo was named 5 of 6. spiderstrategies.com was a source 6 of 6 times and Spider Impact, the product on that domain, was named 4 of 6, ahead of Microsoft Purview. salesforce.com was a source 6 of 6 times and Salesforce was named 2 of 6. Publishing the page that gets cited is itself a route onto the list.
Atlan is the counter-example that proves the rule. It led at 6 of 6 with no atlan.com anywhere in the sources. It got there on other people's pages: Gartner, Reddit, and roundups such as ovaledge.com, which was a source in 4 of 6 answers. So there are two doors in, own the page that gets cited, or get named on the pages that are cited.
Review directories barely registered. G2 did not appear in a single one of the 6 answers, and Capterra appeared once, as capterra.co.uk in 1 of 6. If you assumed the assistants lean on the big software directories for this category, the data says they mostly do not.
What we would do if we sold in this category
If we sold data governance software we would not start with market share, we would start with this source list. Seven of the products in these results had their own domain among the sources, from Domo and Salesforce to Enzuzo and Databricks Unity Catalog, and the 5 domains cited 6 of 6 times are the real gatekeepers.
We would get into the Reddit threads both assistants read, since Reddit was a source 6 of 6 times, and we would publish the kind of roundup on our own domain that earned domo.com and spiderstrategies.com their 6 of 6. We would not spend the budget on G2, which was cited 0 of 6 times here.
The uncomfortable part is that Spider Impact outranked Microsoft Purview 4 of 6 to 3 of 6 in a data governance question. Being named is downstream of being in the sources, not downstream of being the obvious leader. The source list decides who gets said out loud.
The full list, counted
| Product | Named in | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Atlan | 6 of 6 | 100% |
| Collibra | 5 of 6 | 83% |
| Domo | 5 of 6 | 83% |
| Spider Impact | 4 of 6 | 67% |
| Microsoft Purview | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Microsoft Purview Data Governance | 3 of 6 | 50% |
| Salesforce | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Veza | 2 of 6 | 33% |
| Alation | 1 of 6 | 17% |
| Collibra Data Governance | 1 of 6 | 17% |
Note the double-labelling in that table. Microsoft Purview is split across two rows (3 and 3) and Collibra across two (5 and 1), because that is how ChatGPT and Gemini wrote the names. We list them as measured rather than summing them into totals the run did not produce.
Where Glotier fits
To be straight about it, Glotier does not sell data governance software, and we were named in 0 of the 6 answers. That is the correct result, and we would be worried if a governance question returned us. We are not in this category and we did not write ourselves into the table.
The measurement above, though, is the entire thing we do. We ran six buyer questions past ChatGPT and Gemini, counted who got named out of 6 and which domains fed the answers, and turned it into this page. We can point the same run at your category. The check is free, there is no account, and it takes about a minute.
