We asked ChatGPT and Gemini for the best employee recognition software six different ways on 2026-08-06, and four products tied for first: Bonusly, Connecteam, Motivosity and Nectar were each named in 5 of the 6 answers. No single tool ran the table, and nothing was named in all six. Every question triggered one live web search, and we logged each product named plus every source domain the two assistants pulled from.
Behind the four leaders the drop-off is steep. Guusto and Recognize came next at 3 of 6 answers each, then a tier of four at 2 of 6: Achievers, Bonfyre Rewards, Kudoboard and Workstars. The remaining 10 products were each named just once, in 1 of 6 answers. So of the 20 distinct products that surfaced across the category, exactly half appeared a single time.
Even the four leaders each had a blind spot, which tells you the score depends on the question. Bonusly hit 5 of 6 but was missing from the plain "recommendations" query. Nectar and Motivosity each hit 5 of 6 but dropped out of the "best free" question. Connecteam hit 5 of 6 but was absent from the "small teams" cut. Ask the category one way and you get one list; ask it another way and the tail changes completely.
How the shortlist changed with the question
The stable core was four names. Bonusly, Connecteam, Motivosity and Nectar sat near the top of almost every list, yet 10 of the 20 products we saw appeared in exactly one of the six questions. Which question surfaced them is the real story of this measurement.
The "best free employee recognition software" question was the biggest reshuffle. Two of the four overall leaders, Motivosity and Nectar, dropped out of it entirely. Assembly and Wrenly appeared in the free answer and nowhere else, while budget names Guusto and Bonfyre Rewards climbed in. Only 2 of the 4 leaders, Bonusly and Connecteam, survived into that free list.
The "most affordable" question surfaced its own two exclusives: eCardWidget and Empuls each appeared in that answer only, out of all six. Alongside them sat Bonusly, Bonfyre Rewards, Nectar, Motivosity, Connecteam and Guusto, so the affordable list held on to all four leaders, unlike the free list that kept only two.
The "small teams" cut pulled in three names that appeared nowhere else: Matter, Mo and Teamflect, each in 1 of 6 answers. It was also the one question Connecteam missed, despite its 5-of-6 score everywhere else.
The bare "best employee recognition software" query was the only place Kudos showed up, in 1 of 6, and the "recommendations" phrasing was the only place WorkTango and Workhuman appeared, each in 1 of 6. That "recommendations" answer was also the single query where Bonusly, otherwise in 5 of 6, went missing.
The cleanest contrast in the whole set is between two products with identical 3-of-6 scores. Guusto appeared only in the small-teams, free and affordable questions, never in a general "best" query. Recognize did the exact opposite, appearing only in the "best", "what should I use" and "recommendations" questions, never in a price or size cut. Same count, mirror-image coverage.
Where the answers came from
One domain fed every answer. selectsoftwarereviews.com was a source in all 6 of 6 responses. After that came achievers.com in 5 of 6, then bonusly.com, gartner.com and peoplemanagingpeople.com each in 4 of 6. Roundup and review pages, not vendor marketing sites, did most of the work of deciding who got named.
Community threads were thin in this category. Reddit was cited in 2 of the 6 answers and Quora did not appear at all. With so many vendor blogs and professional roundups in the mix, the two assistants leaned on editorial "best of" lists far more than on peer discussion.
The key insight sits in the vendor domains, because several products were named partly because their own website was one of the sources. Bonusly's site was cited in 4 of 6 answers and Bonusly was named in 5. Recognize's site was cited in 3 and Recognize was named in 3. Nectar's site was cited in 2 and Nectar was named in 5. Bonfyre's site was cited in 2 and named in 2. Kudos, Matter, Teamflect, Assembly and eCardWidget each fed one answer from their own domain and each got named, so 9 products in total rode in on their own content.
A cited domain is not an automatic named product, though. Achievers' own site was the second most-used source at 5 of 6 answers, yet the Achievers product was named in only 2. O.C. Tanner (octanner.com, 2 of 6), Tremendous (tremendous.com, 2 of 6), Terryberry (terryberry.com, 1 of 6) and Stadium (bystadium.com, 1 of 6) were all cited as sources without their own product being named once. Their pages functioned as roundups that recommended other people's tools.
The classic crowd review directories were mostly absent. G2 and Capterra appeared in 0 of the 6 answers. The only directory-style sources that showed up were Gartner (gartner.com, 4 of 6) and SHRM's vendor directory (vendordirectory.shrm.org, 1 of 6), with Zapier's blog in 2 of 6.
What we would do to get named in this category
If we sold employee recognition software, the move is blunt: get onto the pages the assistants already read. selectsoftwarereviews.com sits in 6 of 6 answers, so a place on that one list is worth more than market share the models never see. The source list, not company size, decided who was named.
We would also publish our own well-sourced comparison content, because it clearly works here. 9 of the 20 named products earned their spot at least partly from their own domain, including Bonusly (own site in 4 of 6) and Nectar (own site in 2 of 6, named in 5). A credible "best employee recognition software" page on your own site can put you into the answer set.
And we would target the qualifier we can actually win. Because the shortlist changes with the adjective, a smaller tool has a real shot at the "best free" or "most affordable" answer even when it never cracks the bare "best" list. Assembly and Wrenly hold a spot in the free answer, 1 of 6, without appearing anywhere else. That is a genuine way in.

Glotier does not sell employee recognition software, so we are correctly absent from all 6 of these answers. We would not expect to be named here and we did not invent a spot. But the measurement above is exactly what we run for a customer's own category: the same six questions, every product named, and the source domains behind each answer.
If you work at one of the 20 companies named above, or one that thinks it should be, you can run this same check on your own category free, with no account, in about a minute.
