How to rank in Perplexity

Perplexity is an answer engine that runs its own live web search for every question and cites the pages it used, inline, right in the answer. Ranking in it means being one of those cited pages. It rewards slightly different things from Google and from ChatGPT, and the differences are the whole method. Every number below is one we measured on our own pages.

What makes Perplexity distinct: it searches the live web on every question rather than leaning on training, it shows its citations openly so you can see exactly which pages decided an answer, and in our own measurement it named the widest set of products of the three assistants, 65% of everything the full panel named. That openness is an advantage: the sources are right there to read and to earn.

1. Be retrievable, and be fresh

Perplexity re-runs a live search for each question, so being findable for that question is the price of entry, and being current is a real edge. Source sets churn fast: across 20 of our own questions asked on more than one day, only 40.9% of the sources present on the first day were still cited eleven days later. A page kept current can take a slot an older, staler page has quietly lost. Let the AI search crawlers in, too, or none of this can happen.

What we measured, 31 July 2026

  • Of 259 domains AI cited in the AI visibility category on 31 July 2026, 235 allowed every AI crawler.
  • 18 of 244 of those sites block GPTBot but allow OAI-SearchBot, leaving ChatGPT search while opting out of training.
  • Only 5 of 259 cited domains block an AI search crawler by name, and all four are large publishers.

Sample: every domain an assistant actually cited across our own checks, not a top-100 list. Blocked means a whole-site disallow for the matching group, so partial rules are not counted and these figures understate blocking. 0 domain did not answer and is excluded rather than counted as open. How we measure

2. Answer one sub-question, precisely

An answer engine gathers one best page per sub-question rather than stacking a strong domain across the top ten. Across 13 of our own AI answers carrying 168 citations, no domain was cited twice in the same answer. You get one slot, so the way to appear more is to be the clearest page for more distinct sub-questions, not to rank harder on one broad term.

3. Be in the sources Perplexity reads

When we measured which sources AI built its buying answers from, community threads were cited far more than review directories, and Reddit alone was a source for 57% of the answers in our own category. Perplexity leans on exactly these openly. A genuine, helpful presence in the threads your buyers already read is worth more than another directory listing.

4. Write sentences it can quote

Perplexity quotes a span, not a page. Put each claim worth citing in one self-contained sentence that names its subject and carries its own number, so it survives being lifted into an answer. A point spread across three dependent paragraphs gives it nothing to cite.

5. Measure it, next to the other two

Perplexity showed the widest set in our measurement, so it is worth watching in its own right, but it is still one assistant. Track the same frozen questions on a schedule across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini, so a change in who gets cited is a signal and not a reworded prompt.

It is already sending real people

In one week our own page beacon counted 6 real human visitors sent by an AI answer, including from Perplexity, each arriving mid decision. A citation in an answer engine is not a vanity metric, it is a person who followed the link. The way to earn more of them is to be the clearest, best-sourced page on the question they asked.

Common questions

How does Perplexity decide what to cite?

Perplexity runs a live web search for the question, reads the top results, and writes an answer with inline citations to the pages it used. Being cited means your page was one of the sources it retrieved and quoted for that question.

Is ranking in Perplexity different from ranking in Google?

It overlaps, because Perplexity searches the live web, but it rewards a page that answers one specific sub-question clearly over a broad page that ranks for a head term. Freshness matters more, and you get one citation slot per source at most.

Does Perplexity use my Google ranking?

Indirectly. It searches the live web and reads what surfaces there, so ranking helps you get retrieved. But it re-searches every question, so a fresh, specific page can be cited even when an older page outranks it on Google.

How do I check if Perplexity cites me?

Ask it your buyers' questions and read the sources. Glotier runs this free across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini and shows the source list for each answer, then watches it over time from $9.99 a month.
